It Was Finished Upon That Cross - April 2022

Read the full pdf article here.

When we celebrate Easter, we celebrate the cross and the empty tomb. Both of these represent the FINALITY of Jesus' victory over sin and death. "It is finished" (John 19:30), spoke our Savior on the cross as he paid the full debt of the wrath-deserving sin of his sheep through his atoning death. By his decisive resurrection from the grave he has relocated us by raising us up with him in the heavenly places (Eph. 2:6)! Oh church of Christ, let us glory in these wonderful truths, lifting our voices and letting the joy of our hearts overflow through the sacrifice of praise from our mouths (Heb. 13:15)!

It Was Finished Upon That Cross

Written by Jonny Robinson, Rich Thompson, & Nigel Hendroff

Lyrics:

How I love the voice of Jesus
On the Cross of Calvary
He declares his work is finished
He has spoken this hope to me
Though the sun had ceased its shining
Though the war appeared as lost
Christ had triumphed over evil
It was finished upon that Cross

Now the curse it has been broken
Jesus paid the price for me
Full, the pardon he has offered
Great, the welcome that I receive
Boldly I approach my Father
Clothed in Jesus’ righteousness
There is no more guilt to carry
It was finished upon that Cross

Death was once my great opponent
Fear once had a hold on me
But the Son who died to save us
Rose that we would be free indeed!
Free from every plan of darkness
Free to live and free to love
Death is dead and Christ is risen!
It was finished upon that Cross

Onward to eternal glory
To my Savior and my God
I rejoice in Jesus’ victory
It was finished upon that Cross

Where I’m Standing Now

Written by Phil Wickham, Brian Johnson, & Brandon Lake

Lyrics:

Verse 1

Out of the wilderness
Into Your deliverance
Look where I’m standing now
These hands that once were chained
Now lifted high in praise
Look where I’m standing now
Look where I’m standing now

Chorus

I stand on the chain breaking
Miracle making
Powerful name of Jesus
On the body raising
Prodigal saving
Powerful name of Jesus

Verse 2

Led by Your mighty hand
Into the promise land
Look where I’m standing now
You carried the cross for me
Now I am a child of the King
Look where I’m standing now
Look where I’m standing now

Bridge

Hallelujah I’m free
Hallelujah I’m free
Jesus my Savior rescued me

Jesus Strong and Kind - February 2022

(View pdf article here)

Where do we go when we are needy, weak, and afraid? To whom can we turn when we are disappointed, finding ourselves unsatisfied with what the world offers? Is there anyone or anything that is constant when we and our world are ever-changing?

Far from being a simple "Sunday School answer", we turn to Jesus! He invites us to come to him and drink of living water that never runs dry (John 4:14), to run to him in our weakness for there his power is on display in abundant grace (2 Cor. 12:9), and to receive his peace that settles our hearts and calms our fears (John 14:27). More than that, on our own all of us are lost in sin until Jesus comes to us. It's significant that Jesus is both strong and kind. He is infinitely mighty and unmeasurably compassionate, demonstrating is love and power on the cross for all of God's children (Matt. 11:25)

One of the thoughts that undoes me the most is not my children getting hurt, but my children being afraid. And the startling truth is that when they are afraid, while I may be able to console them for a time, I will not always be able to be there for them. This song, written with children in mind, offers us plain and simple biblical language for running to Jesus. Accompanied by a simple singable melody, "Jesus Strong and Kind" could just be that song your children learn early and sing for a lifetime.

I should come to him
No one else can satisfy
